US & Russia relations, a new start?

President Obama and President Medvedev committed their both countries in a new relationship. They used the expression “a fresh start” at their first meeting. We can not reproach both President to engage themselves in a new way and trying to find solutions about many world issues.

Another situation would have been strange. Let me remind you that the relationship between US and Russia is quite weak since the cold war. Nobody can forget how communism and capitalism were opposite during that time. Besides, relations were not really warm last years (for example, cause of the Russian’s invasion in Georgia). As Obama said, both countries are different but they have to go over it. It’s of course a nice argue and very easy to use. Every country could tell the same about another one.

But all of that is past and now they are trying to cooperate on Afghanistan’s war and Iran’s threaten. The second meeting, few days ago was for the G-20. They met few minutes only together and with their Secretary of State. This meeting has to my mind a double meaning.

First when you are the president of the US, you have to meet others countries and try to find some compromises about current topics. In this article, we can find the most important “first meeting” between American President and Russia and President. It’s more like a symbol.

Secondly, the situation is quite difficult for Obama in the G-20. European countries don’t really agree with the American financial policy. The summit may be divided in two parts: Europe and America. The question is: “what Russia thinks about that?”  In US’s mind, a nice consensus could be finding thanks to Russia…

So, last Wednesday, both Presidents could appear not really stressful together. After few common jokes, they began talking about current topics. The meeting was such amazing that both Presidents vowed for a meeting in July in Moscow. They also asked for changing mentalities about Russian and US relationships. Both of them want to show up that such relationship can be useful for the world.  The main issue about Iran’s nuclear weapons can show that. They almost agree to say that Iran has to respect the NPT and can only get a civilian nuclear program. US and Russia want also to ask for more international weapons inspections in Iran.

However, they brought some specialists and according to the article, Obama didn’t mention one of his leaders in Russian’s affairs for example. The reason is cause of some trouble with Russia. Besides, some journalists like saying that we could see troubles are still visible between both countries (for example, about European missiles defense). So, they will talk about everything but everything means everything allowed and not critical of course!
